The 1st battalion of the Honourable Artillery Company arrived in France on 20th September, 1914, and spent the next 6 weeks as Lines of Communications troops before joining 8 Brigade of 3rd Division on 9th November at Zelobes near Estaires. On the following day they marched with the rest of the brigade to Croix Barbée where they went into support trenches in front of Neuve Chapelle. On 24th November they went into the front line for the first time in trenches at Neuve Eglise, each company spending a day there until the battalion was relieved and moved to billets in Westoutre on 27th November. According to records, including those of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, Albert Thomas was killed on 25th November but the battalion diary shows his death as being on 26th November. |
